Notion Systems and MBRAUN agree on strategic cooperation in the field of new system developments for future display technologies

September 28, 2020 – Notion Systems GmbH

Notion Systems GmbH, a leading manufacturer of industrial inkjet systems for functional materials, and M. Braun Inertgas-Systeme GmbH, a leading manufacturer of glove boxes, inert gas purification and automation solutions, set the base for a strategic partnership in OLED processing equipment.

Best-in-class portfolio by combining production technology of both companies strengthens the respective market positions and improves market access in Asia. Both companies are participating in the growing demand of OLED manufacturing in Asia. OLED displays provide much better contrast, brightness, lower power consumption, are simpler designed and are the display of the future.

The n.jet display series for RGB and TFE printing can be used as a stand-alone system for R&D purposes or as a fully integrated production cluster, including automation and pre- and post-treatment.

Most of the current OLED display are manufactured using vacuum evaporation technology. The underlying processes ask for FMMs (fine metal masks) and are typically of low material yield which specifically becomes a problem when the extremely high costs of current high-end OLED materials are taken into account. Furthermore, the scalability of this technology is difficult and the equipment costs increase exponentially in between the substrate generations.

With the development of the n.jet series both problems have been not only addressed but also solved with the result that OLED can be made by inkjet printing, which is a direct print, mask free, fast and cost-effective process with an unmatched material yield.

The n.jet display series can be used to print functional layers in various steps of display production as well as for various other display technologies. This includes rigid, flexible, OLED and PLED. In addition to its unparalleled precision, the platform complies with the highest demands on process environment and process stability. Specifically developed features, like the no.mura printing technology solve long-standing challenges of the industry and enable an efficient, additive use of the valuable materials involved in manufacturing of next generation displays.

The n.jet display series has a fully integrated MBRAUN laminar flow box enclosure, which prevents any kind of particle contamination but also ensures nearly isothermal process conditions. In contrast to many other competitors the Notion/MBRAUN solution covers only the process area and saves tremendous costs in electricity and process gases.

Additional system features are a MBRAUN gas purification system to maintain a pure inert gas atmosphere inside a hermetically sealed enclosure. MBRAUN provides a wide range of gas purification system to reach values of <1ppm O2 and H2O, but not only.

Inert atmosphere is important, but a clean atmosphere too. MBRAUN systems can remove solvent vapors, dust and hazardous particles. The gas purification systems can be equipped with (regenerable) solvent filters to remove very quickly the solvent vapors produced during the printing process. To effectively remove evenly distributed particles, the unidirectional flow (laminar flow) is MBRAUN’s preferred approach and allow us to achieve an ISO Class 2 cleanroom standard.

In addition to the inert atmosphere, MBRAUN provides system solutions which effectively pre-treat the substrates and cure the printed layers. State of the art VCD tools allowing precise control of temperature and pressure. A range of thermal treatment solutions such as hotplates, convection ovens and vacuum ovens in batch and single substrate setup as well as UV-cleaning and UV-Curing equipment complete the fully process of pre-treatment – printing – curing.

Close to the customer – this concept is applied by Notion and MBRAUN’s worldwide sales and service network. Several service bases in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China do not only ensure professional and efficient support for the clients but also act as a hub for partners such as Notion Systems.
