Successful Conclusion of the Funding Project “3D Fun” with Würth Elektronik Group: Pioneering Sustainability in Electronics Manufacturing through Additive Processes

29.07.2025

July 29, 2025 – Notion Systems GmbH & Würth Elektronik Group

Notion Systems GmbH, a leading provider of industrial inkjet printing systems for functional materials, is proud to announce the successful conclusion of the 3D Fun project in collaboration with its long-term development partner, Würth Elektronik Group.

The project focused on a comprehensive evaluation of the environmental impact of current additive solder mask technologies, alongside the development of next-generation additive features for printed circuit board (PCB) production.

The results are groundbreaking:

•    ~66% reduction in energy consumption
•    ~70% reduction in carbon footprint

These figures, based on data from the Öko-Institut located in Freiburg, demonstrate that reliability, functionality and environmental responsibility can go hand-in-hand when leveraging additive manufacturing processes.

In addition to sustainability gains, the project achieved significant technological advancements. With features and dams up to 1.4 mm in height, 3D printing on PCBs is now a tangible reality, opening new possibilities for design and functionality in electronics manufacturing.

“We were very happy to host the conclusive meeting of this funded project with our trusted partner Würth Elektronik Group,” said David Hahn, VP Process R&D at Notion Systems. “This collaboration not only reinforces our commitment to innovation but also highlights the transformative potential of additive technologies in driving sustainable industrial practices.”

“The results of this project clearly show that additive manufacturing is not just a technological upgrade—it’s a strategic step toward a more sustainable and efficient future in electronics production,” said Dr. Alina Schreivogel, Head of Research Center at Würth Elektronik Group. “We are proud to be part of this pioneering effort and look forward to further innovations in this field.”
